1. General Issues
Remember, you don't really need TWAIN to use Draftsman 2002 or Cutting Shop.
Even if you can't scan from within the program, you can still scan using
the software that came with your scanner, save the scan in a format that
your Arbor Image software can import (.PCX or .TIF should work well), and
open or import the raster image normally. This sounds like much more bother
than it really is. Consult your scanner's documentation and your Draftsman
User Manual for more information.
Required Files: To use TWAIN with the 32-bit version (Draftsman
2002 or Cutting Shop), you need the following files in your Windows* directory:
-
twain.dll (9-15-95 or newer)
-
twain_32.dll (9-15-95 or newer)
-
twunk_16.exe (12-11-95 or newer)
-
twunk_32.exe (12-11-95 or newer)
(Some earlier versions of these files may work, but these are
the earliest we have tested.)
If problems occur, check the file \windows\twain.log for error messages.
If you need to contact us about a TWAIN problem, it might be helpful if
you had a printout of this file handy.
(The above assumes that "windows" is the directory where Windows
95 or Windows NT files are located. If not, substitute the name of that
directory on your system.)
2. Logitech ScanMan Issues
1. "The first time I try to scan, I get a hardware error message."
Click on OK on that and OK on the Hardware Setup dialog that comes
up; this allows you to scan.
This problem may not show up on all machines.
2. Subsequent attempts to scan require you to manually alt-tab to the
process named 1632 after selecting the ScanMan as your source.
The following files must be installed:
\windows\twain\scanman\hhscanw.dll (2-1-96 or newer)
\windows\vhhscand.386 (1-18-96 or newer)
(The above assumes that "windows" is the directory where Windows
95 or Windows NT files are located. If not, substitute the name of that
directory on your system.)
The [386Enh] section of system.ini must contain the following line:
device=vhhscand.386
Attempts to use earlier versions of the drivers will produce the message,
"Invalid Bitmap" after aquiring the image.
3. Logitech documentation states that the scanner will not work
with a version of TWAIN.DLL dated August or September of 1995 and the recommends
downloading TWUNK.EXE which contains newer versions. However, their newer
version of TWAIN.DLL is identical to our version dated 9-15-95.
4. Logitech documentation states that there is a problem Acquiring
on Compaq computers with more than 16mb of memory. Contact
Logitech for more information.
4. UMAX Scanner Issues Updated
2/4/99
Problem: Error Message "Scanner Operation () Failed..."
Draftsman PLUS 32 version 11: We have identified a problem in
the TWAIN interface when using UMAX desktop scanners. This problem is not
fixed by updating the TWAIN and TWUNK files. You can still scan outside
Draftsman using the software that shipped with your scanner, save as a
compatible raster format, and bring the raster into Draftsman PLUS 32 using
the File|Import Raster command. Consult your scanner's documentation
and your Draftsman PLUS 32 User Manual for more information.
This problem does NOT appear to occur in Version 12. We have
tested a Umax Vista S6 scanner using VistaScan v.2.11 and the Umax UDS
IS11 SCSI interface card, without failure. Users of Version 11 who have
a Umax scanner are advised to upgrade to Version 12. Call us for more information.
5. Hewlett-Packard Scanner Issues Updated
4/24/98
1. When you do a Preview scan, HP's Deskscan software occasionally
"resets" the resolution and image type to what it thinks the settings should
be for that particular scan. If you already set these before doing a preview,
the software will often change them resulting in an image that Draftsman
PLUS can't work with (a greyscale or color scan, a much lower or higher
resolution, etc.).
Get in the habit of double-checking resolution and image type before
doing a final scan. Consult your HP scanner documentation for more information
on these settings.
HP's Deskscan II version 2.3 software has been extensively tested with
Draftsman PLUS 32. Version 2.4 has not been tested. Version 2.6 has recently
been tested with draftsman PLUS 32 and works fine.
2. Some HP scanners are currently shipping with software from
Adobe called Photo Delux. Customers have told us that they cannot create
a black and white raster when scanning from this software. One customer
of ours said that an Adobe technical representitive told him that their
software indeed cannot create black and white files.
We have not tested our software with Adobe Photo Delux, or with any
of the HP scanners it ships with. However, we have recommended this workaround
to several customers and it seems to work fine: go to this site:
http://www.shareware.com
...and download Paint Shop Pro for your platform. This is a Shareware
program you can download for free (the shareware fee is a bargain, so please
pay it). PaintShop's TWAIN interface will allow you to scan as a black
and white image, or to convert a color or grey image to black and white.
6. Cannon Scanner Issues Updated
4/28/97
As of 4/28/97, Canon has supplied us with what they say is the release
version of their 32-bit TWAIN drivers. Unfortunately there is still a TWAIN
compatibility problem between our software and Canon's new drivers, so
you cannot currently use Draftsman PLUS 32's TWAIN interface with Canon
scanners. You can still scan using the software that shiped with the scanner,
save as a raster format importable into Draftsman, and bring the raster
into Draftsman using the File|Import Raster command. For more information,
consult your scanner's documentation and the Draftsman PLUS 32 User's Manual.
When a fix for this problem is available, this document will be updated
with information on how to receive the upgrade or patch necessary. If you
would like us to notify you when we have fixed this problem, please send
an E-mail message to Tech Support with the words "Canon Scanner"
in the Subject field. Please be sure to include a method of contacting
you in addition to your E-mail return address (phone, fax or mailing address).
For information on obtaining a copy of Canon's new TWAIN drivers, see
Canon's Web site.
7. "Twacker" TWAIN Diagnostic Utility
Copies of Draftsman PLUS 32 shipped after Feb. 5, 1997 include a utility
called "Twacker" for testing your TWAIN interface. This utility does not
install from the floppies during a "Typical" installation, but can be installed
at any time by doing a "Custom" installation from the disks and installing
the entire software package. (We recommend doing an "uninstall" of Draftsman
PLUS 32 before re-installing the software with Twacker. See your user manual
for details on the Uninstall proceedure.) When you contact Arbor Image
Tech Support for assistance with a TWAIN-related problem, you may be asked
to install and run Twacker.
If you don't have the Twacker utility on your disks, don't worry. We
can provide you with a copy, if you really need one.
